Crown Packaging Helps Leading Manufacturer Eliminate Expenses While Improving Packaging Processes

Summary

Crown Packaging Corp. partnered with a leading manufacturer to introduce new packaging improvements, enhance sustainability, significantly reduce costs, and boost productivity.

Top companies strive to find new ways to improve the quality of their products and processes, including the method in which their products are packaged and the distribution operation that delivers them.

Crown Packaging recently helped an industry-leading manufacturer headquartered in Western Pennsylvania solve multiple operational challenges, including better managing and storing their packaging materials, optimizing their packaging process to increase throughput, and reducing the overall cost of their packaging process.

After considering several vendors, the company’s team lead by the Supply Chain Manager selected Crown Packaging Corp. as their preferred packaging provider.  The two companies collaborated to uncover new opportunities for improvement across the packaging process.

Introducing Packaging Innovations

A primary factor for why Crown was considered the best supplier was because of the mix of products and services it offered.

With a vast supplier network, including the industry’s top material and equipment manufacturers, Crown offered the company access to thousands of product options.  This allowed them to find the right packaging solution based on their unique requirements and product specifications.

Crown Packaging - Customer Support

Another value-add is the expertise that the Crown Packaging staff offers. Alex Jachnycky, a Crown Packaging Specialist who supports the account, shared more insights.

“We aim to really understand our customers’ needs,” Jachnycky stated. “By working together, we were able to find packaging solutions that met their requirements – both in terms of cost-effectiveness and product protection.”

Among the packaging solutions leveraged by the manufacturer was an inflatable bubble (IB) system by Sealed Air, which allows for packaging for cushioning to be produced on-demand.  The IB materials store flat to reduce the need to excess storage and can be inflated quickly to help maximize throughput.

Presswood pallets were another innovative solution delivered by Crown.  Made of lightweight recycled materials, presswood composite pallets are an alternative to wood pallets that aligned with the company’s goals of reducing costs and supporting sustainability.

We take a lot of pride in helping our customers solve problems and achieve their business goals. With the right solutions, we can help an organization not only improve their packaging but their bottom line.

Reducing Cost and Complexity with VMI

In light of longer lead times for supplies due to industry-wide shortages, a major priority for the organization was mitigating supply chain disruption.

Packaging Warehouse Many companies consider purchasing larger quantities of packaging materials and warehouse them at their distribution center.  However, the supply chain manager found that required dedicating more space to storage and less to production, not to mention introducing new overhead expenses.

Crown offers regional warehousing of packaging materials and just-in-time delivery which enable the manufacturer to ensure they always have the supplies they need when they need them without investing in extra storage space.

Tim Westropp, Regional Branch Manager at Crown offered more details about why this is so important.

“With our vendor-managed inventory (VMI) program, we can store packaging supplies for the customer and deliver it on-demand,” Westropp shared.  “This allows them to reallocate space in their distribution center for production which helps boost throughput while reducing overhead expenses.”

The manufacturer further streamlined their process by taking advantage of Crown’s kitting services, matching pallet cover bags with sets of pallets.

We aim to really understand our customers’ needs. By working together, we were able to find packaging solutions that met their requirements – both in terms of cost-effectiveness and product protection.

Better Business Outcomes through Better Packaging

With Crown Packaging as their packaging partner, this leading manufacturer was able to introduce new packaging improvements, enhance sustainability, significantly reduce costs, and boost productivity.

According to Westropp, “We take a lot of pride in helping our customers solve problems and achieve their business goals.  With the right solutions, we can help an organization not only improve their packaging but their bottom line.”
